English for Energy and Climate Change

Course Description

This module focuses on four academic pillars

a. International Political Economy (IPE) studies the enduring political battle between the winners and losers from global economic exchange and focuses on how this shapes the evolution of the global economy. Reference is made to a number of IPE problems that are essential to a sound understanding of the world today. Emphasis is placed on the British School vs. the American School, the Views of Susan Strange and Geoffrey R.D. Underhill, the Three Traditional Schools of IPE. What is International Political Economy-IPE? Why Study IPE?

b. The Global Economic Crisis- the Greek Debt Crisis. Key terms

c. The Climate Change Crisis, issues such as climate change-global warming and its consequences, the human impact on the environment, applications of agent based modeling in ecology and the environment, nuclear energy, the arguments against an anthropogenic climate change, green cities, green roofs, cool pavements and fuel poverty, the ethics and politics of climate change are discussed in a considerable depth.

d. Energy issues such as energy efficiency, biomass, renewables-renewable forms of energy, comparing oil to natural gas and coal, shale gas, future energy sources in the 21st Century, Ukraine and Russia energy crises, Gas developments in Eastern Mediterranean, the energy sector in Iran ,Third Energy Package in the EU, The Keystone XL pipeline, The role of Shale oil and Shale gas in energy markets, ,Target Model in the Gas Market in the EU, Climate Change Negotiations, Climate Change legislation in the EU, Hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’.

Course Aims and Learning Outcomes

• To introduce basic elements in International Political Economy-a number of IPE problems that are essential to a sound understanding of the world today.

• To expose the students to a richness of diverse language terminology fundamental to understanding the words of oil and gas industry as well as climate change crisis.

• It explores the issues of Energy and Climate Change which give students an invaluable grounding to think through the problem, assess the data and draw conclusions on the action that should be taken, by governments, by industry and by each and every one of us.

• To introduce key terms used in these fields

• To develop class discussion of topics related to IPE, Global Economic Crisis, Climate Change, Environmental and Energy Issues
