The course initially focuses on economic concepts and tools essential for understanding maritime economics, particularly shipping markets. It is based on internationally accepted standards and draws upon international literature to analyze and comprehend key concepts related to shipping markets. It focuses on shipping market economics, sea transport, the global economy, and the economic organization of the shipping market, as outlined in M. Stopford’s seminal textbook. It also provides a detailed analysis of specific shipping markets: the freight and derivatives market, the secondhand (Sale & Purchase) market, the shipbuilding market, and the demolition market. Furthermore, it examines the specialized markets for dry bulk, liquid bulk, and container shipping.The primary objective and learning outcome of the course is for students to gain familiarity and proficiency with the economic concepts, theories, and analytical tools used in maritime studies, thereby enabling them to delve deeper into specialized maritime issues in subsequent semesters. A secondary objective is to utilize these tools, concepts, and theories to understand the mechanics, structures, and functioning of shipping markets, with the intended learning outcome being the ability to analyze and forecast market developments.
