Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course English for Communication in Tourism aims to familiarise students with a range of topics related to the field of Tourism Studies. The course book, Academic English for Tourism, Travel and Hospitality, is designed to enhance students’ reading skills and strategies while expanding their topic-specific vocabulary. The reading texts and comprehension activities develop students’ ability to understand and critically engage with texts relevant to the field. Meanwhile, vocabulary and terminology activities help students develop their academic and professional vocabulary. In each lesson, in addition to working with the course book, students engage in communicative tasks that are designed to prepare them to participate effectively in authentic communicative contexts within the tourism industry. They practise a wide range of communicative skills relevant to the tourism industry. These include negotiating, managing conflict, delivering presentations, and adapting their register and tone to different audiences and contexts. They also develop their ability to persuade, provide and support arguments, and express and respond to disagreement diplomatically. In addition, they practise clarifying and paraphrasing information, asking and responding to questions, and giving clear explanations and instructions. They learn to handle complaints and difficult situations effectively and to participate confidently in discussions and meetings. Particular emphasis is placed on building rapport with clients and colleagues, demonstrating intercultural awareness and sensitivity, and communicating effectively with international clients, colleagues, business partners, and other stakeholders in the tourism industry.
